Help those less fortunate in our community by donating coats, food and toys to our annual holiday drives. The difference you can make this holiday season can be as simple as a warm body, full stomach and grateful heart.

Coat Drive: Now through Nov. 2
Donate new or gently used coats, hats, scarves and gloves at our annual coat drive. Donations will be given to A Wider Circle for distribution.

Food Drive: Nov. 3 - Nov. 19
Donate canned vegetables, rice, instant mashed potatoes, stuffing, other non-perishable foods, gift certificates and even cash to give local families something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Angel Tree Toy Drive: Nov. 20 - Dec. 16
When you visit our Y after November 20th, make sure you stop by our Angel Tree and help fill the Christmas wishes of a local child.


Healthy Cooking basics
Wednesday, November 5th, 7pm

Learn to make food that is tasty and good for your body! This class is FREE of charge and taught by Kristy McCarron, the YMCA’s own Healthy Eating Specialist, Dietitian and Chef. It will be fun and easy-to-follow for people with all cooking abilities!

This workshop is brought to you by: YMCA Anthony Bowen's Nutrition Team, Sam's Club Pioneering Healthier Communities, YMCA Silver Spring's Wellness Team and the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program.


Swim for A Cause
November 11th, 12th or 13th

Our Fall 2014 Swim-A-Thon is coming up on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, November 10th, 11th, and 12th! This year, we are making this a full-branch initiative, inviting all YMCA members to participate. There is no minimum age for the Swim-A-Thon, and all ages and swim levels are encouraged to join in the fun.

Participation is easy:
  1. Complete a pledge form
  2. Show up and swim anytime Nov. 10th, 11th, or 12th, keeping track of the number of laps you swim
  3. Turn in your completed pledge form and donations to Laura Dunn, Joshua Smith, or Jenny Dillon

All participants are encouraged to raise a minimum of $25 in donations. Prizes will be given to the four highest earners. The money you raise goes directly to our Piranhas Swim Team, helping them purchase much-needed equipment! Any money not used by the swim team will go to our Caring for Community scholarship fund.


Low Back Health Seminar
Saturday, November 15th, 10am-11:30am

A sedentary lifestyle, poor posture, and general stress can make our low backs ache. But this doesn’t have to be so! Learn yoga poses and movements to release tension in your low back and strategies for keeping it strong and supported.

Registration is required at the front desk, and, while the event is free, we hope you'll consider giving a minimum $10 donation to our Caring for Community scholarship fund. For more information, email Hannah Hutton or call her at (301) 585-2120.


Cause an Effect

Fundraiser Dinner at Chipotle!
Tuesday, November 18th, 4pm-8pm
Chipotle, 907 Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring, MD

Make dinner a selfless act by joining Chipotle for a fundraiser to support YMCA Silver Spring. Just come into the 907 Ellsworth Dr. Chipotle on Tuesday, November 18th, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. Bring this flyer, show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you're supporting the cause to make sure that 50% of the proceeds will be donated to YMCA Silver Spring!


Family Fun & Adventure

Open House, Free to the Community!
Wednesday, November 19th, 9am–11am & 5pm-8pm

As the fall harvest rolls in and the holidays knock at our doors, it’s the perfect time to celebrate. The YMCA makes a positive impact on thousands of people in the DC region, and we want you to get to know our welcoming community. For 160 years, we've been creating experiences that help children and adults grow - summer camp, group exercise, basketball, family festivals, swim lessons, connections in our branches. At our Open House, you’ll discover all that and more! Activities will include:

  • Group Exercise Classes (free Zumba, Dance & Y-Cycle)
  • Education on Breast Cancer
  • Youth Sports
  • Swimming in our Indoor Pool
  • Raffles, such as a free personal training session
  • Applications for free swim lessons

Pickleball at the Y!

What is pickleball, you may wonder? It's a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. And we're proud to offer it here at YMCA Silver Spring! 

Sign up for our Pickleball Monthly Pass and join us for non-stop fun!

Pickleball play hours:
Monday 8:00 PM—9:30 PM
Tuesday & Thursday 1:30 PM—3:00 PM
Sunday 12:00 PM—3:00 PM

With the Monthly Pass:
You get 9 or 18 officiated opportunities to play guaranteed throughout the month.
Discounts on additional Pickle Ball events (Tournaments and Leagues included).
Enhance your skills through competition for the upcoming November and December League!

PROGRAM FEE: $20 for 9 days; $40 for 18 days


Challenge Yourself To Change
Mon., November 3rd - Wed., December 31st

Tackle the holiday season with good form and healthy behaviors. Read weekly newsletters, track diet and exercise, participate in guided workouts with certified trainers, and meet great people on your journey to a healthier lifestyle. Check in on Monday or Friday with Hannah, Kimeshia, Mark, or Chris for weigh-ins, behavior change consultations, and workouts!

Prizes will be awarded to:
  • The person who loses the biggest percent of their starting body weight
  • The person who loses the most inches
  • The person who lowers their body fat percentage the most
PROGRAM FEE: $50
WHEN: Starts Monday November 3rd (Consultations done Mondays and Fridays)


free swim lessons for families who qualify

Swim lessons not only keep kids safe in the water, they can also be the first step in building confidence, social skills and healthy living. We are excited to learn your child wants to swim! Through the generosity of Shannon’s Fund, a scholarship opportunity named in memory of Shannon Hawkins (one of our beloved aquatics instructors), we are able to provide free swim lessons for youth and teens between the ages of 6 and 17. In order to qualify for the funds, recipients must have little to no swimming skills and demonstrate a financial need.
