Parkinson’s disease is a challenging, progressive neurological disorder that affects millions worldwide. Over time, it causes the brain’s dopamine-producing neurons to degenerate, leading to tremors, muscle stiffness, and loss of balance and coordination. These symptoms can greatly impact daily life, but recent research shows that exercise, especially cycling, can provide significant benefits for those with Parkinson’s. Now, the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington is introducing an innovative program to bring these benefits to our community — Pedaling for Parkinson’s!

About Pedaling for Parkinson’s

Starting this fall, the YMCA’s Pedaling for Parkinson’s program is set to make a difference for people living with Parkinson’s disease across the DMV area. Thanks to the generous support of the Parkinson’s Foundation, this program is free for everyone and offers a welcoming space for members and community participants alike.

The program is structured as a three-day-a-week, 60-minute cycling class that runs for eight weeks. Each session, led by a certified Pedaling for Parkinson’s instructor, includes a warm-up, endurance phase, and cooldown, with varied tempos to keep participants engaged and moving. Research from the Cleveland Clinic suggests that cycling at a steady pace of 80-90 rotations per minute can reduce Parkinson’s symptoms by as much as 35%. This class not only helps slow disease progression but also promotes overall mobility, health, and well-being.

Instructors with Heart

The YMCA team behind this program is passionate about bringing physical and emotional support to those affected by Parkinson’s. Kristy McCarron, Vice President of Health and Wellness, shares, “For a patient with Parkinson’s, this class can keep them moving and doing the things they want to do. It may be counterintuitive with something as serious as Parkinson’s, but a fun cycle class can be just what the doctor ordered.”

Senior Director of Health Programs and certified instructor Anita Dandeker adds, “Beyond improving balance and mobility, participants get a huge mood and energy boost from exercise and socialization. Nobody needs that more than those fighting a disease like this.”
